    Historical Presidential Visits to Durant

๐Ÿ›๏ธ PRESIDENTIAL HISTORY OF DURANT & THE CHOCTAW NATION

The October 1, 2026 visit by President Donald J. Trump adds another chapter to a long history of presidential connections to Durant and the Choctaw Nation.
Two previous presidents are particularly significant to that history: Theodore Roosevelt in 1905 and Barack Obama in 2015.

    THEODORE ROOSEVELT โ€” 1905

President Theodore Roosevelt visited Durant on April 5, 1905, during a journey through Indian Territory,  At that time, Oklahoma was not yet a state.
Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory were still separate, and Durant was located within the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory.
Oklahoma would not become the 46th state until November 16, 1907.

๐Ÿš‚ Roosevelt's Journey Through Indian Territory

Roosevelt was traveling by train through Indian Territory on his way to Texas, where he was scheduled to attend a reunion of the Rough Riders, the volunteer cavalry unit with which he had served during the Spanish-American War. His journey included stops in several communities. Historical records indicate that Roosevelt stopped in Caddo and Durant, both within the Choctaw Nation, and delivered brief remarks during his journey. The American Presidency Project preserves the text of Roosevelt's remarks in Durant dated April 5, 1905.

    ๐Ÿ‘ฅ Large Crowds Welcomed Roosevelt

Roosevelt's trip through Indian Territory attracted large crowds. At Atoka, for example, historical accounts describe several thousand people gathering at the railroad depot to welcome the president. Roosevelt continued westward, making stops in Caddo and Durant before continuing toward Texas.

    ๐Ÿ›๏ธ Durant Was Indian Territory

One of the most interesting things about Roosevelt's visit is the historical setting. He was not visiting the modern state of Oklahoma. He was visiting Durant in Indian Territory, within the Choctaw Nation. His visit took place more than two years before Oklahoma statehood.

    BARACK OBAMA โ€” 2015

More than a century later, President Barack Obama visited Durant on July 15, 2015. Obama's visit was particularly significant for the Choctaw Nation.
He traveled to Durant High School to announce the launch of ConnectHome, a federal initiative designed to expand access to high-speed broadband for families across the country. The initial ConnectHome initiative included 27 cities and one tribal nation โ€” the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.

    ๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿฝ OBAMA & NATIVE YOUTH

Before his public remarks, President Obama met with Native youth from:
    • Choctaw Nation
    • Cherokee Nation
    • Chickasaw Nation
    • Muscogee (Creek) Nation
Obama discussed opportunities for Native youth and the partnership between the federal government and the Choctaw Nation. He also discussed the Choctaw Nation's designation as one of the country's Promise Zones, an initiative focused on economic development, education, housing and community opportunities.

๐Ÿ’ป CONNECTHOME & THE CHOCTAW NATION

ConnectHome was designed to help address the digital divide by expanding access to:
    • Affordable high-speed Internet
    • Digital literacy training
    • Technical assistance
    • Technology and devices
The Choctaw Nation was the only tribal nation included in the initial ConnectHome pilot, alongside 27 cities. Local organizations were also involved, including Southeastern Oklahoma State University and Durant Independent School District, which were expected to provide free digital literacy courses to residents in the Choctaw Nation.

๐Ÿ“ฐ A HISTORIC VISIT FOR THE CHOCTAW NATION

The Choctaw Nation's newspaper, Biskinik, covered Obama's 2015 visit as a historic event. Approximately 970 people attended Obama's appearance at Durant High School, while additional people gathered at the Choctaw Event Center to watch the presidential event via livestream on large screens. The Choctaw Nation's coverage described Obama's visit as the first official visit by a sitting president to the Choctaw Nation's tribal territory in more than a century. The coverage distinguished Obama's visit from Theodore Roosevelt's 1905 passage through Durant. Roosevelt had traveled through Durant during a whistle-stop journey through Indian Territory, while Obama's 2015 visit was described as an official presidential visit to the Choctaw Nation.

๐Ÿ“ THE CHOCTAW EVENT CENTER CONNECTION

There is an especially interesting connection between Obama's 2015 visit and the location of the 2026 Trump event. When President Obama visited Durant in 2015, the Choctaw Event Center served as a gathering location for people watching the presidential event via livestream. People gathered at the Event Center to watch the historic event on large screens. Eleven years later, the same venue is scheduled to host a sitting president. In 2015, people gathered inside the Choctaw Event Center to watch a presidential visit on screens. In 2026, attendees will gather inside the same venue where President Donald J. Trump is scheduled to deliver his remarks.

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, October 1 for a successful event!
